While Ohio has lost much of its presettlement landscape, many nearly pristine habitats remain. These relics are populated by a fascinating array of flora and fauna. Wild Ohio singles out the best of Ohio’s natural lands and documents their importance in words and photographs. Because the state has lost over 90 percent of its wetlands and over 99 percent of its original prairie, Wild Ohio focuses especially on rare and declining animals and plants with the intention of inspiring a love of nature and an interest in conservation.

Revelations captures the spirit of the African American worship experience through arresting images of congregants’ facial expressions and body language, their colorful uniforms and dress, and the solemnity of their worship. The images of baptisms, weddings, funerals, Sunday services, and special celebrations are at once serene and exaltant, pensive and inspirational. Revelations honors not only the spiritual dimension of the African American church but the pride and dignity that prevails within the churchgoing family.

In 1999 Cleveland Plain Dealer photographer Michael S. Levy was given an assignment by his editor to provide images for a feature article about research being conducted by members of Cleveland State University’s Center for Sacred Landmarks. Cleveland’s Urban Landscape is the product of that assignment.

This new collection finds photographer James Jeffery Higgins exploring the fading farms and small towns of the Ohio Valley. Higgins’s photographs capture the beauty and majesty of the landscape and the spirit of the people who remain in a region beset by economic losses. While recording the ever-present signs of hard times, he also captures a powerful sense of place, a victory of the spirit.

Over the last 150 years, steel production played a vital role in the shaping of our nation. This was especially true in Youngstown, Ohio, a part of what is now often referred to as “the Rust Belt.” In their prime, however, the Youngstown mills ran along 25 miles of the Mahoning River and employed tens of thousands of people. All of that changed in September 1977 when the LTV Corporation announced that it was closing its Youngstown Works. Youngstown today struggles for its survival.

When photographer Gary Harwood first stepped onto the K. W. Zellers family farm in Hartville, Ohio, to take pictures of the Mexican migrant workers there, he did not expect to find such a strong, tightly knit community. Over the next five years he used his camera to study the lives and work of these migrants in their northeastern Ohio home. His artful photography captures the migrants’ portraits and movingly conveys their great pride in work and family, their struggles and joys.

Arthur d’Arazien’s particular talent was to photograph American industry. He recorded with artistry, precision, and passion the powerful, emotional impact of giant machines, immense structures, and complex artifacts. His photographs are the result of meticulous planning and implementation on a grand scale. He was an experimenter and an innovator, pioneering such techniques as multiple exposures on a single sheet of film; lights in motion in the dark; and the use of reflectors, flash powder, and strobe lights to illuminate huge interior and exterior spaces. He experimented with films, cameras, lenses, focus, exposure, filters, and lighting to achieve just the right effects.

A remarkable work of documentary history, The Last Muster is a collection of rare nineteenth-century photographic images—primarily daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and carte des visite paper photographs—of the Revolutionary War generation. This extraordinary collection of images assigns faces to an un-illustrated war and tells the stories of our nation’s founding fathers and mothers, updating and supplementing research last collected and published over a century ago.
