The Kent State University Press invites letters of interest for the editorship of Civil War History, a quarterly journal committed to the best scholarship on “the middle period”—covering the entire scope of the American Civil War era, from the genesis of the sectional crisis through Reconstruction and beyond, highlighting the ramifications of warfare on society. Its topics include slavery and abolition, antebellum and Reconstruction politics, diplomacy, social and cultural developments in mid–nineteenth-century America, and military history.

The journal, now in its seventh decade of publication, has long provided a platform for both established and emerging scholars, fostering rich conversations among specialists of all types who share an interest in this important period of American history, in all of its complex dimensions. Civil War History is committed to providing constructive discourse across a variety of historical approaches and concerns, including culture, gender, race, ethnicity, class, religion, politics, and global context.

The term of appointment will begin January 1, 2021, though there is a possibility of beginning earlier during a period of overlap with the current editorial leadership, and will extend for a period of three years with possibility for renewal. The editorship carries a yearly stipend, and some financial support for travel and other related expenses may be available. The position will seek support from the editor’s home institution, which might include course release and some level of administrative assistance, typically in the form of a graduate assistant. In return for supporting the editor’s contributions, the Kent State University Press recognizes the editor’s home institution as a sponsor of the journal in all official communications.

The editor is supported by both the Press staff and by an editorial board consisting of prominent scholars in the field. While the editor is responsible for soliciting, receiving, and coordinating the peer review process for the journal’s content, all copyediting, design, production, and distribution matters are handled by the Kent State University Press.
